Wood that has been exposed to the elements will turn gray, signaling the damage that has occurred. Even the milling process of lumber can hinder the application of a sealer to a newly constructed deck. This is why wood must be properly cleaned first with a product that is specially formulated to be good to the wood and not cause more damage like those containing bleach. Like a dermatologist, Phil knows how to exfoliate the UV damaged cells and mill glaze so that protection can be applied to a fresh surface, allowing for longer performance of the sealer. By properly preparing and protecting exterior wood surfaces, the life of the lumber can be greatly extended, which means a savings in the long run.

Below is a typical cedar deck that has been exposed to the elements for about 5 years. Note the rails are looking pretty rough and in need of a proper cleaning.

After applying a top of the line cleaner and allowing it to soak in for about 10 minutes. I then carefully power washed the area. Night and day difference in surface prep will be a major factor on the performance of the "finish/sealer" in the next step.
